Description
Steven Scholes Signed Original Oil Painting – Liverpool Strand Street Dock Road 1911 Edwardian Cityscape ? Subject & Medium Original oil on canvas by listed British artist Steven Scholes (b.1952). Titled "Strand St (Dock Rd) 1911", this signed Steven Scholes work captures an atmospheric Edwardian Liverpool cityscape on the waterfront. Painted in oil and presented in its original traditional wooden frame, this is a genuine original painting, not a print or reproduction. ? Composition & Technique The scene depicts a wet evening along Strand Street and Dock Road with the distant silhouette of the Liver Building visible through the dockside mist. A row of street lamps and their reflections lead down the cobbled road. Figures, horse-drawn carriages and early motor vehicles populate the street; warm shopfront lighting (including the name “M. Jones”) and brick warehouses provide strong architectural interest. Scholes’ technique uses rich browns and umbers for the wet cobbles, golden and white highlights for gas lamps and windows, and a modulated sky from smoky greys to gentle ochres to convey light, movement and atmosphere. ?? About the Artist Steven Scholes is a professional Lancashire artist, born in 1952. He won the Manchester Evening News Art Competition in 1974 and became a full-time painter by 1978. Scholes is known for vivid historical cityscapes with dramatic light and wet pavements; his work has been exhibited and sold at auction, with a recorded auction price of around $1,660 USD for "City Lights, London 1958". Signed Signed "STEVEN SCHOLES" lower right on the front. The canvas stretcher is inscribed in pencil with the title: "Strand St (Dock Rd) 1911" on the reverse. ? Framed Presented in its original traditional wooden frame with a fabric-lined inner slip. The dark wood frame complements the warm street lighting and gives the painting a classic, ready-to-hang gallery look. ? Dimensions Framed: Height: 43 cm Width: 53 cm Depth: 2.8 cm A medium, easy-to-place size for an office, hallway, lounge or study. ? Provenance From a private art collection. Retains a framer’s label on the reverse: "Victoria Gallery Picture Framing – Prints – Paintings – P. Hart – Tel 051 495 1194." Now in the collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. Why You’ll Love It A classic Steven Scholes northern cityscape — evocative Edwardian Liverpool subject, atmospheric light and wet cobbles. Signed original oil painting on canvas, presented framed and ready to display. Rich period detail (Liver Building, gas lamps, horses and early motor traffic) that appeals to collectors of Liverpool history, northern art and architectural city views. ? Condition Offered in fine used condition. The paint surface is overall very good with a stable original finish. Under close inspection there are tiny specks of foxing/staining and light craquelure consistent with age and medium, but these do not distract when on display. The original frame shows light scuffs, small chips and minor losses to the moulding, commensurate with age and adding period character. Hanging thread is attached and the work is ready for immediate display. ?
