A captivating watercolour on paper, backed with board and protected under glass. This artwork beautifully depicts six Bedouin tribesmen — three on camels, three walking — making their way along the sandy banks of Egypt’s Suez Canal, painted just a few years after the canal opened in 1869.

Composition & Technique
Harper’s masterful watercolor technique shines through, blending delicate, muted earth tones with subtle washes of gold, ochre, and soft sienna to bring the sunlit desert to life. The pale yellow sky fades gently into sand-gray, evoking the heat and vastness of the Egyptian landscape.

About the Artist
Henry Andrew Harper (1835–1900) was a prominent British watercolorist born in Barnham, Bedfordshire. His works have been shown at the Royal Academy of Arts and sold at top-tier auction houses like Christie’s, fetching up to $39,855 USD. In the early 1870s, Harper traveled to Egypt with friend and patron William Ward, the First Earl of Dudley, where he captured the vibrant, lived scenes that defined his Middle Eastern works. Harper passed away in 1900 at Westerham Hall, Kent.
