Description
19th Century French Oil Painting – “In Hot Pursuit” by Guillaume Urban Régamey – Signed Hunting Scene with Hounds
Subject & Medium:
This is a magnificent oil on canvas by French master Guillaume Urban Régamey, renowned for his dynamic equestrian and hunting scenes, painted circa 1860.
Composition & Technique:
The composition bursts with movement and vitality, capturing three huntsmen on horseback mid-charge as they and their spirited scent hounds pursue a fox across the rugged French countryside.
The lead rider lifts a white handkerchief triumphantly, while his companions follow, one in a vivid red hunting jacket and the other in formal black with a top hat. The earthy greens and browns of the landscape contrast beautifully with the crisp whites, deep blacks, and brilliant red accents of the riders’ attire.
Régamey’s brushwork is expressive yet controlled, with confident, lively strokes that bring energy to the galloping horses and swirling hounds. The sky, rendered in cool blues and moody grays, creates a dramatic backdrop, balancing the intense activity in the foreground. Every detail — from the horses’ muscular forms to the subtle textures of the terrain — showcases the artist’s mastery of realism and movement.
