Antique Scottish Landscape | Oil on Board | Signed by RSA RSW Artist | Gilt Frame | Collectible Highland Scene
Subject & Medium
Subject: Evocative Scottish Highland scene depicting Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran
Medium: Oil on board
Date: Circa early 20th century
Title: Evening, Glen Sannox
Composition & Technique
This captivating Highland landscape immerses the viewer in the rugged beauty and serene solitude of Glen Sannox at dusk. The scene unfolds across the moorland of the Isle of Arran, with the dramatic silhouettes of the Arran mountains rising boldly in the background beneath a softly glowing golden evening sky.
In the foreground, a narrow track winds its way through open grassland and rusty heather, drawing the eye gently into the depth of the landscape. Rich earthy tones of greens, browns, and russets reflect the cool Highland air, while a small plume of smoke rising from behind a dark copse of trees adds a subtle, human presence — perhaps a distant cottage or fireside, hinting at warmth and habitation.
The midground and distance are dominated by layered mountains painted in tones of deep blue and grey, forming a striking silhouette that frames the valley and enhances the overall scale and drama. The sky, brushed in soft hues of ochre and pale grey-blue, glows with the last light of day, with feathered clouds drifting above, setting a tranquil and contemplative mood.
Houston’s brushwork is confident and harmonious. His painterly technique blends the structure of tonal realism with the emotion of Scottish Impressionism — light and form are balanced perfectly to reflect the natural grace of the scene. The painting captures not just a place, but a moment of peace, stillness, and timeless connection to the land. A powerful, atmospheric work by a master of Highland landscape art.
