A fine late Victorian era Circa 1900 oil on canvas portraying the illustrious Marchesa Elena Grimaldi Cattaneo — one of Genoa’s most prominent noblewomen of the early 17th century. Title "Regal Grace & Noble power Portrait of Marchesa Elena Grimaldo Cattaneo". This painting is executed after the celebrated work of Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), capturing the same elegance and poise that made the original a masterpiece of Baroque portraiture.
Elena Grimaldi was born into the Grimaldi family, one of Genoa’s most powerful dynasties, with deep connections to Mediterranean trade, finance, and politics. Her marriage to Marchese Nicola Cattaneo united two of the city’s wealthiest and most influential houses. In life, Elena was admired for her refinement, education, and representation of the perfect Genoese matriarch — embodying the virtues of chastity, loyalty, and dynastic pride. This portrait was more than decoration; it was a visual declaration of her family’s power and her own commanding presence in society.

Composition & Technique
The Marchesa is portrayed against a dark, velvety background, her fair, porcelain-toned skin glowing with an almost ethereal light — a classic Van Dyck hallmark. She gazes calmly yet confidently toward the viewer, her lips slightly curved in a suggestion of reserved assurance.

About Sir Anthony van Dyck who was a Flemish master and one of the most important portraitists of the 17th century. Van Dyck’s portraits revolutionised noble portraiture — blending the imposing scale and elegance of Titian with a psychological depth that gave his sitters an almost living presence. His influence was so enduring that portraits after his compositions, like this one, continued to be produced for centuries.

Overall good for its age. Canvas has been relined, with gentle craquelure consistent with the period; minor retouching visible under UV light. The surface is stable, the colours deep and luminous. Surface has been professionally cleaned & housed in a richly ornamented later gilt frame which has wear and minor losses, ready for immediate display.
