In 1816, Thomas H. Hughs constructed a luxurious boarding house out of wood comprising an entire city block in the heart of Cape May, New Jersey: the iconic Congress Hall. For his lavish new building, Hughs commissioned a famed Mount Holly clockmaker, Edward Hudson, to build two movements for two existing locally made cases which would be placed at the two entrances of Congress Hall's grand foyer. In partial payment for his contribution, Hudson was granted a room free of charge for the entire summer!
The clock featured in this listing is in fact one of the two clocks created by Hudson for Congress Hall (the other sold recently at another nearby auction, realizing $16,000) It is constructed from richly toned mahogany and features striking design elements such as inlaid holly stringing throughout, fluted mid quarter columns and colonettes, and four painted "Cape May Fan" spandrels. It has 8-day bell striking movement, a white painted dial with arabic numerals and a calendar wheel, seconds bit, and rolling moon wheel. This is an extremely rare chance to own a beautiful piece of Cape May's history.

Brooks Auction – Online Auction Terms & Conditions Contact: (856) 694-2960 | info@brooks.auction READ BEFORE YOU BID: We want you to feel confident when bidding. Please take time to read item descriptions carefully and reach out with any questions or requests for additional photos before placing bids. Descriptions are written in good faith based on the information available at the time of cataloging and may be updated or clarified. Condition descriptions are opinions provided for guidance only. All bids are binding. All items are sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS, with no guarantees or warranties, expressed or implied. Items are not tested unless explicitly stated in the description. SHIPPING: We can help with shipping or freight and are glad to point you in the right direction when needed. Shipping is handled through a trusted third-party shipper, and all shipping, handling, and freight costs are the buyer’s responsibility. If shipping is part of your plan, feel free to reach out with questions. Timelines can vary based on item size, volume, and carrier availability, and any estimates provided are just that—estimates—and may change once items are packed and scheduled. Shipping Department: Phone (voice or text) (856) 347-4621 | Email shipping@brooks.auction. Items are packed with care using methods chosen to best protect them in transit. Buyers are responsible for selecting and paying for any shipping insurance they’d like. For larger or freight items, buyers arrange their own shipper and coordinate pickup in advance. Items not picked up are not automatically shipped. INVOICES & PREVIEW / PICKUP HOURS: Invoices are sent after the entire auction has closed. This gives us time to wrap up the sale, double-check totals, and get everything staged and ready on our end. On auction days, pickup begins at 2:00 PM. Please don’t arrive earlier—we’re not hiding from you, we’re just hustling behind the scenes to make pickup smooth and organized for everyone. Preview and pickup both take place during our regular business hours: Monday 9–4, Tuesday 9–4, Wednesday 2–7, Thursday 9–4, Friday 9–4. Buyers are responsible for bringing their own help, tools, packing materials, and appropriate vehicles for pickup. If you have questions about your invoice, preview, or pickup, just reach out—we’re happy to help once things are ready. PICKUP, STORAGE & ABANDONMENT: All items must be paid for and picked up within two weeks of the auction close. Items not picked up within this two-week period will incur a storage fee of $5 per lot, per business day for up to an additional two weeks. Storage fees apply automatically once this window has passed. Partial pickup does not pause, reduce, or reset storage timelines. Items remaining after four weeks from auction close are considered abandoned and may be resold, donated, or otherwise disposed of at our discretion. No refunds or credits will be issued for abandoned items. BUYER’S PREMIUM & PAYMENTS: If you’re new to auctions, here’s how pricing works. The final price you pay is made up of your winning bid, a buyer’s premium, and sales tax when applicable. The buyer’s premium is a standard part of auctions and helps cover the cost of running the sale. At Brooks Auction, the buyer’s premium depends on how you pay. Paying by credit or debit card includes a 23% buyer’s premium. Paying in person at pickup with cash or check includes a 20% buyer’s premium, reflecting a 3% savings for paying at pickup. How and when payment is collected depends on where you bid. LiveAuctioneers: The card on file will be charged automatically 72 hours after your invoice is sent. Brooks Auction App / https://bid.brooks.auction: Payment may be made at pickup. If payment is not received within two weeks, the card on file will be charged automatically. New Jersey sales tax (6.625%) is added where required unless a valid resale or tax-exempt ID is on file prior to invoicing. PHOTOS & LOTS: Photos are provided to help show items, condition, and scale. Any cube, ruler, toy, or prop used for scale is not included unless specifically stated. Lots may include multiple items and are grouped as shown and described. Photos may not capture every detail or every item included, so we recommend reviewing both the photos and the written description to understand what’s included in each lot. Photos help tell the story, but the written description ultimately defines the contents of a lot. Assumptions based on photos alone can’t be used as the basis for adjustments, refunds, or returns. If something in a photo or description doesn’t look right, raises a question, or you’d like to see more detail, please let us know before bidding. We’re happy to review the lot and provide additional photos when possible. NONPAYMENT: Winning a bid means you’re agreeing to complete the purchase. Invoices that go unpaid may result in removal from future Brooks Auction sales and may be reported to LiveAuctioneers. Removal may be temporary or permanent. Items associated with unpaid invoices may be resold at our discretion, and buyers may be responsible for any losses, fees, or costs that result from nonpayment. ALL SALES FINAL: All sales are final. No refunds, returns, or exchanges. Brooks Auction | www.brooks.auction Please read the rest of our TERMS AND CONDITIONS on our website. {{LZ}}
