Title: 16th C Riamondi Engraving Albrecht Durer Life of the VirginAdditional Info: "The Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple" after Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) by Marcantonio Raimondi (1480-1534) from the series "The Life of the Virgin", originally printed circa 1511. This copy made by Raimondi circa 1534 and retaining the Durer monogram. Engraving trimmed to edge, platemark 5, light mounting remnant on verso and small repair to lower right corner. The engraving on laid paper with circular watermark. Measures 8.25 x 11.5" (After Bartsch 81). According to scholars including Giorgio Vasari, Durer was enraged about his work being copied by Raimondi. Durer complained to the city council of Venice, who ruled that Raimondi could produce the copies but must remove the Durer monogram. Further accounts state that Durer allowed the monogram to remain so he would at least get credit for the work. The case is viewed as one of the earliest relating to intellectual property rights.
