The accompanying Ottoman crescent marking signifies the rifle was later supplied by Germany to the Ottoman Empire during World War I. A remarkable rifle whose history is preserved through its unit markings. The middle barrel band is marked 1.G.G.R. R.1.81. (later crossed out), identifying early issue to the prestigious 1st Garde-Grenadier Regiment “Alexander,” an elite Prussian Royal Guard unit stationed in Berlin. It was subsequently reissued to 55.R.6.173, denoting the 55th Infantry Regiment, 6th Company, Weapon No. 173, before ultimately serving with Ottoman forces during WWI. From the royal guards of Berlin, to a frontline German infantry regiment, and finally to the battlefields of the Ottoman Empire, this rifle tells the story of decades of military service through its original markings.
