Description
This lot features an **extremely rare 1976 Alembic guitar designed by Doug Irwin and Susan Wickersham**, representing an important period in the development of the custom electric guitars associated with the San Francisco music scene. The instrument incorporates design concepts that preceded and helped shape Irwin’s later work, including the celebrated **Wolf guitar built for Jerry Garcia**. Alembic was closely connected with the Grateful Dead during this era, producing and modifying instruments and equipment for the band, including custom basses played by **Phil Lesh**. According to the provenance accompanying the instrument, this guitar was originally played by a guitarist associated with the jazz-fusion group **The Yellowjackets**. The guitar remains in **exceptional condition considering its age and history of use**. Combining the work of Doug Irwin and Susan Wickersham with Alembic’s influential 1970s craftsmanship, this 1976 instrument represents a significant early example from the lineage that helped define some of the most recognizable custom guitars of the Grateful Dead era.
