Sam Francis (1923- 1994):- Born in California, Francis spent most of his early life there where he would attend California- Berkley. While recovering from an injury sustained in the Army, Francis turned to art as a way to cope with the difficulties. At Letterman Hospital, he met and studies with painter David Park. At this time his mastery of thinned acrylics and oils to make blot splotches became quite evident. This abstract, yet expressionist style was welcomed by the art community and lead to Francis being one of the most lauded artist of the 20th century. He had a way to make his artwork refreshing and neat, thus decorative compared to abstract artists of the past. He spent much of his career in France rather than the United States and this is the likely influence of the decorative characteristics. As his artwork gained popularity in the 1950s, when his work was gaining national attention, Sam Francis left San Francisco for france.
