Description
This is an antique portrait of a beautiful Victorian era socialite. Early 20th century. American school. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left by well listed artist S. B. Baker (Samuel Burtis Baker, 1882-1967), best known for his portraits of the rich, the beautiful, and the fabulous. From the Clementi Family of North Carolina. The painting itself measures 32" x 25" and is displayed in a gilt wood and gesso frame measuring 35" x 29". Lovely period piece.
Condition: The painting has been varnished, which makes it difficult to tell if and where it has been touched up. The canvas is slightly loose, as you can see, particularly in the upper right hand corner. Most likely the original period wood frame with losses to the gesso, as shown in one of the photos. It is still an amazing example of fine American portraiture.
