This lovely XVIII c. soup tureen is quite a nice piece even with the broken lid which was repaired in the early 1900. It is decorated with tulips and other flowers; the handle of the lid is a small artichoke. It belonged to a "Maitre Simon" indicating that he was either a lawyer or a notaire. It was quite common in those days to have your name on the main dishes in a household to show that you belonged to middle class or bourgeoisie.

The soup tureen is 8.75" long and 7" tall. Inside measurements are 7.25" long and 5.25" deep. It weighs 2.14 lb.

Provenance is probably from Faience de Luneville in the Lorraine region of France (well known for its various faience makers in the 18th and 19th century) This piece has been in my french family for several generations. It was used quite often as a centerpiece on the dining table resting on a mirrored tray to show the tureen in all its sides.
