Anoush Rahnavardkar (1924-1983), familiarly know as ANOUSH, was born in Northern Iran by the Caspian sea. A renowned Iranian artists in his native country, were he worked as both a sculptor and a painter, his favored subject matters included still lives, pastoral scenes peopled with local characters such as can be seen in this picture.

He is also known for his idealized female portraits and portraits of dignitaries such as the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Iran at the time.. His paintings figured in several royal collections and they adorned some of the royal palaces and public spaces.

He traveled to Europe and the United States on several occasions to study the masterpieces found there. Nevertheless, he developed and maintained his very individual style notable for the use of clumps of paint allowing that medium to take on a sculptural quality on the two dimensional canvas.
