A member of one of Prussia's notable artistic families, Encke was the younger brother of sculptor Erdmann Encke and the grandson of Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau, whose close association with King Frederick William II of Prussia placed the family within the cultural circles of the royal court.

By the 1880s, Encke had established himself as a portrait painter of international reputation, maintaining a Berlin studio while traveling extensively between Germany, Paris, and New York.
