Spongeware is a type of pottery decorated by dabbing paint or colored slip onto a ceramic surface using a natural sea sponge. This creates a distinct, mottled pattern. Originally produced in the 19th century as inexpensive, everyday kitchenware, it is now highly prized by collectors for its charming, rustic folk-art appeal.
