Description
The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road is a series of ukiyo-e woodcut prints created by Utagawa Hiroshige after his first travel along the route in 1832. The Tokaido Road, linking the Shogun's capital, Edo, to the imperial one, Kyoto, was the main travel and transport artery of old Japan
Okitsu-juku was the seventeenth of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido Road. It is located in what is now part of the Shizuoka Prefecture. This classic ukiyo-e woodblock print depicts two sumo wrestlers being carried across the Okitsu River, one on a packhorse and the other in a kago.
This print was purchased from the estate of an art collector and its provenance is unknown. Please refer to all photos and note the texture of the handmade paper, along with the distinctive mat profile and age of the frame.
