Description
Title: Fossil Mesosaurus complete skeleton from Brazil 278 m.y.o.
Description: A spectacular -and rarely seen in such quality- complete genuine fossil skeleton of Mesosaurus tenuidens (Gervais, 1865) of early Permian age (278 million years old appr.) from the famous Irati Formation of the Parana Basin in Brazil. Professionally prepared and presented in an exhibition wooden frame and protected by special non-reflective glass. Overall dimensions: 60 x 24 x 4 cm, total weight: 5.5 kg.
The now extinct Mesosaurus is one of the earliest-known aquatic reptiles, a pioneer of life in freshwater ecosystems. Its slender body, elongated tail, and paddle-like limbs made it perfectly adapted for swimming, and its needle-like teeth indicate a diet primarily consisting of small aquatic prey. As one of the first reptiles to return to an aquatic lifestyle, Mesosaurus plays a key role in understanding the evolution of early reptiles and their adaptations to diverse environments.
The fossil record of Mesosaurus also holds significant scientific value, providing key evidence for the theory of continental drift. Fossils of this species have been found in both South America and Africa, supporting the idea that these continents were once connected as part of the supercontinent Pangaea.
