Up for auction is an exceptional Eddystone Rifle Plant (ERA) Pattern 1914 rifle chambered in .303 British, featuring desirable original markings, a complete set of volley sights, and an outstanding overall presentation. This example retains an excellent condition wood stock with very few handling marks, preserving the attractive appearance and character expected from a well-maintained military rifle. The rear of the stock is marked with the "IE" inspection marking within a circle, followed by "patt'14" and the "EY" marking, identifying its Pattern 1914 configuration and Eddystone manufacture. The left side of the receiver is also stamped "EY," further confirming the rifles Eddystone production heritage. The rifle features a complete set of volley sights, an important and distinctive characteristic of the Pattern 1914 design that adds significant collector interest. The blued metal finish is outstanding overall, with some honest wear marks visible on the bolt and buttplate. The rifle has no visible import marks present and exhibits good and smooth mechanical operation. The bore is shiny with good strong rifling, making this an impressive example of the .303 British Pattern 1914 rifle.
The Pattern 1914 rifle represents an important chapter in British and American small arms history, developed during the First World War as a replacement design for British service rifles and produced in large numbers by American manufacturers to support wartime demands. The Eddystone Rifle Plant, operated by Remington Arms Company during this period, produced the largest number of Pattern 1914 rifles of the three U.S. manufacturers. Collectors highly value examples retaining original Eddystone markings, intact volley sights, strong condition, and unaltered military characteristics. The combination of Eddystone manufacture, preserved stock markings, complete volley sights, excellent finish, and lack of visible import markings makes this a particularly appealing example for collectors of World War I-era military rifles.
