White lined paper letter, measuring approximately 10.25" x 8", handwritten on the front and reverse and twice signed in black ink by notorious criminal Robert Stroud, better known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz." The first example appears as the handwritten return address in the upper left corner, while the second appears as his closing signature. Dated August 11, 1955, less than a decade before Stroud's death in 1963, the lengthy letter is addressed to a correspondent in Florida and contains an extensive discussion of business ventures, sales and marketing strategies, investment ideas, education, dictionaries, and language studies, reflecting Stroud's analytical and intellectual writing style. In very good condition, with scattered wear throughout, including toning and creasing. One of America's most infamous prisoners, Stroud inspired the acclaimed 1962 film Birdman of Alcatraz starring Burt Lancaster.
