The photograph was taken by photographer Chris Cuffaro on July 22, 1991, in the bathroom of his Hollywood home, shortly after the band completed recording and mixing their groundbreaking album Nevermind. Released just two months later, Nevermind would become one of the defining albums of the 1990s and propel Nirvana to international fame.
