Biographical note:

Dr. Abraham S. Kagan (1888–1963) was a New York dermatologist and a collector of Russian and Russian-Jewish modernist painting. Born in Borisoglebsk, Russia, he graduated from the University of Königsberg in 1914 and served as a major in the Russian Army during the First World War. Following the Revolution he fled across Siberia to Harbin, Manchuria, where he directed the Jewish Hospital until 1935, before settling in New York in 1937, where his practice drew a clientele of writers, actors, artists, and singers. His collection included works acquired directly from the Russian-born American modernist Ben Benn, two of which were sold at Sotheby's, New York, in 2004. The present painting passed by descent to his daughter, the sculptor Zara Eliash (d. 2001), of 50 Central Park West, New York, and was acquired directly from her estate by the present owner.
