Description
The Skinny
There's something timeless about cobalt and gold - especially when it comes from Rosenthal Continental's "Charlemagne" pattern. This vintage 1970s-1980s set of seven dinner plates features a deep cobalt blue border adorned with intricate gilt scrollwork, lattice cartouches, and classical floral detailing. Elegant without feeling overly formal, they bring instant presence to a layered, collected table.
More Details
Set of seven Rosenthal Continental "Charlemagne" dinner plates.. Crafted by Rosenthal Continental, Germany, part of the renowned Rosenthal porcelain house founded in 1879. The underside bears the green Rosenthal Continental Germany backstamp consistent with late 20th-century West German production, along with factory decorator marks. The "Charlemagne" pattern reflects Rosenthal's neoclassical European aesthetic - rich cobalt grounds paired with ornate gold decoration inspired by formal continental dinner services. Circa late 1960s-1980s, most likely 1970s-1980s based on the backstamp.
The bold cobalt rim framed in ornate gold scrollwork evokes classical European dining traditions while still pairing beautifully with crisp white porcelain, brass flatware, or contemporary glassware for contrast. Each plate measures approximately 10.5" in diameter. In very good vintage condition. Porcelain remains glossy and bright with no chips or cracks noted. The gold decoration is vibrant, with only light, age-appropriate surface wear consistent with gentle use. Overall, the set presents beautifully and retains strong visual impact.
