Description
This antique piece is a classic American Victorian "side-by-side" secretary desk and bookcase, typically dating from the late 1890s to the early 1900s.
It features a highly functional, asymmetrical design made of dark-stained oak.
Key Visual & Structural Features include a top gallery (Hutch) with ornate, pierced scrollwork and organic leaf carvings.
A small, central round mirror is framed by decorative wood accents and the wardrobe (Right Side): This wardrobe reveals multiple adjustable wooden shelves, designed for holding clothing, or if used like it was originally intended, books or documents.
The Desk & Storage (Left Side) includes two wide drawers at the top with ornate, bright brass drop-pull hardware.
A drop-front slant desk compartment below the drawers is heavily decorated with relief carvings of scroll designs.
A lower cabinet door at the bottom featuring deep, symmetrical leaf or floral carvings for hidden storage.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Design Modified
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: This piece has some nicks and bumps as shown in the photos. I believe this side by side was renovated, because there 's some evidence of poly dripping on the side (see picture.)
