1940's Signed PAUL SAMPLE Watercolor Vermont Landscape Painting.
American Listed painter, Paul Starrett Sample established his career as a Regionalist landscape, figure and genre painter from the early to Mid-20th Century. Although Sample grew up in the mid-west, he graduated from Dartmouth and then became an artist. He studied under Jonas Lie and then became a faculty member of the UCLA. It was when he spent summers in Maine and Vermont that he developed a unique style influenced by the American movement called "Regionalism", depicting scenes of American life.
He moved to New England in 1939 and became the artist in residence at Dartmouth. He was elected to the National Academy of Design, where he had already won many exhibition prizes, and many museums and collectors obtained his work. In the 1940's, LIFE Magazine recognized Paul Sample as one of the foremost painters in America. (Ask Art Biography)
