John James Audubon was a French-American naturalist and artist who studied and illustrated birds of North American in detail during the first half of the 19th century. This pair of prints consists of his bald eagle and brown pelican lithographs. Per a 1981 version of Audubon's Birds of America, "the eagle shown in this portrait was shot in 1820 when Audubon was going down the Mississippi in a flatboat. He painted the bird feeding on a Canada goose...The young pelican, painted in New Orleans, was one of Audubon's mixed medium efforts: a combination of pencil, watercolor, pastel and oil." The prints are matted in contemporary expresso-toned wood frames that set them off beautifully. Frames measure 27.75" X 33.5." Prints as seen inside the mats are 15.5" X 21.5." Note that the age of these two prints is unknown, but they were framed around 2020.
