Description
GIACOMO GUARDI 18th Century Old Master Painting of Venetian Lagoon. Provenance.
Old master painting in oil on canvas by the artist Giacomo Guardi (1764-1835). This is a particularly fine work by Francesco Guardi's son, Giacomo Guardi. Like his father, Giacomo is also a master of the Venetian Genre paintings which picture the beautiful ancient city and it's colorful people. It is likely that this painting was executed while Francesco was still alive. It expresses a similar style and technique. It shows excellent draftsmanship and artistic quality of the foreground figures on the quay to the smallest of details. This painting could well be the work of a collaboration with Francesco. After the passing of his father, Giacomo concentrated mostly on small format paintings in gouache or drawings. His oil paintings from the early period are extremely Rare. Giacomo Guardi committed himself to the great tradition of Venetian Baroque art. His works exhibit great atmospheric charm and are of great historical value. Guardi's works are preserved by prominent museums around the globe. This painting belonged to the estate of the renowned collector, philanthropist Henry Alexander Count of Salm-Hoogstraeten, Tuxedo Park, New York. A label on the back of the painting states the attribution to Giacomo Guardi.
