Relined canvas with new frame

Beautiful and delicately executed, this late 19th century painting is a peaceful scene which evokes nostalgia for a vanishing place and time. The peasant in harmony with nature was a characteristic theme of Italian Romanticism which began in the 18th century, and throughout the 19th century landscapes such as this were in high demand among aristocratic travellers to Italy who came from England and Northern Europe.

This painting is signed and attributed to Giuseppe Carelli (Italy, 1858-1921), the youngest of the Carelli family of five renowned Neapolitan landscape painters. The majority of the Carellis' works depict Italy's Campania region, particularly seascapes of the Bay of Naples, although they also painted far beyond Naples. This painting is one such work, recalling Italy's idyllic mountain lake vistas.
