Description
Oil on canvas, RELINED and taped to protect stretchers. Original beautiful gesso and gilt frame. Signed J Thors in bottom left.
This piece preserves the aura of mystery and enigma associated with the great tradition of Dutch landscape painting. While the scene could be inspired by an English landscape, Joseph Thors' alluring panorama includes a distant windmill set against a far horizon and vast sky filled with looming clouds - possibly recalling his childhood in Holland. In the foreground a solitary figure on a shadowy path lends life to the scene but her presence is dispirited by the dying tree nearby which persistently draws our attention. It is an image of somber and captivating beauty. Thors features a similar, mysterious tree in many of his works.
Joseph Thors (1835-1920) was born in Amsterdam but spent most of his life in England. His art is inspired by the Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century, which is known as the Golden Age of Dutch painting. Thors was a leading landscape painter of Victorian England and his work is represented in several British public collections. This is an impressive and important piece for any collector of European art.
