Description
Auction hammer records for Charavel exceed $61,000. Impressionist oil painting by listed French artist, Paul Charavel (1877-1961). This beautiful large signed oil dates to around 1910 - 1920 and depicts the steps of a terrace bathed in light and shadow with flowers on the steps. Charavel uses lovely impasto to create dappled sun kissed light and dark in this work. It is signed lower right. We believe this work was executed at La Villeneuve in the Creuse where Charavel painted with Montezin as his influence is very evident. Canvas size: 26"W x 21"H.
Paul Charavel worked with Bonnat and Albert Maignan as his masters. He regularly participated in the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais, of which he became a member in 1901; he won an honourable mention there in 1902, a third-class medal in 1907 and a gold medal in 1927.
His genre scenes, and particularly those featuring bathers, have a solid character accorded by the light that sculpts his forms.
Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment. Ellen Kelleher, a personal finance reporter for The Financial Times wrote an article recommending art, particularly in the $500 - $50,000 range as a sound long term investment with an impressive current average annual yield of 9.7%.
