About the Artist and Print
Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858), "Fukagawa Susaki Jumantsubo," from the series "Meisho Edo hyakkei" (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), 1857, intercalary 5th month. Color woodblock print on paper; oban nishiki-e.
Claude Monet accumulated an impressive 231 Japanese woodblock prints and displayed them throughout his house in Giverny, France.
One example of a print he owned is this literal bird's-eye view by Utagawa Hiroshige. Such a dramatic perspective was among the more influential features emulated by many French and American artists who were inspired by the fresh viewpoints and novel compositions by their Japanese counterparts.
