Description
This original oil on canvas painting by American artist Philip Myers (1922-2012) is a wonderful piece of atmospheric realism that depicts a brisk, overcast day in Paris and features the Carrousel du Trocadero. The carousel sits in the Jardins du Trocadero (Trocadero Gardens) on the Right Bank of the Seine across from the Eiffel Tower. The large, cream-colored building with the slate-grey mansard roof in the background is typical of the Haussmann architecture found in the 16th arrondissement, and the carousel has a classic red-and-blue striped canopy and ornate gold trim. The horses are frozen in mid-prance. The figure in the center-right is a quintessential French police officer (agent de police). Other figures include men and women walking by the carousel presented in a realistic but painterly style.
The unframed painting measures 42 inches by 36 inches and is ready to hang. We can arrange to have the picture framed in a style of your choice, just contact us.
About the Artist:
Philip H. Myers (1922-2012) studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1945 to 1952, after serving in the 101st Airborne Division ("The Screaming Eagles") in Normandy, the heart of the European theater in WWII. At the Art Students League, he studied under Reginald Marsh, a legendary American painter known for his realistic depictions of NYC street life. This influence is clearly visible in the everyday subject of this painting, in which the artist follows the tradition of "Plein Air" painting. In his early years, Myers devoted most of his work to portrait painting, including commissions by Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Sonny Jergensen of the Washington Redskins and Bob Forster, Light Heavyweight Champion. In his later years, Myers settled in Saratoga Springs, New York, and his palette became lighter and more vibrant. A listed artist, Myers' paintings are in the collections of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C., Mississippi State University, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD., Marquis DeMilfontes, Portugal, Galleria de Bari, Italy and many private collections.
