Masterpiece Chinese Jadeite Carved Phoenix & Magnolia Bloom Vases
Late Qing- early 20th century, Chinese
This large size pair of carvings with standing phoenix (14.75" from comb of bird to bottom of tail feather). The color of the jadeite ranges from lavender, white, tan, and apple green to the small bird at the top of the magnolia bloom. The combs on both phoenixes are tan in color. The magnolia blooms (large blooms H 9.75"). The phoenixes are carved with fine detail to feathers, wings, and tails with incised work. The magnolia blooms with overlapping petals in relief and fine use of jadeite color to magnolias.
Bases are carved in late Art Nouveau style with lotus and scrolling water with original period patina.

Cataloguer's Note:
It is very hard to carve large areas of jade for open work like the delicate example here of the legs of the cranes and stems of the magnolias.
This pair of vases was acquired by Mark Walberg from the Jack Belz Collection of Memphis TN. The carved wood bases are weighted and are most likely by Edward Farmer of NY. Collector's tag on base: 42 pair 3188.
These were also previously in a Christies NY Chinese Works of Art sale.
