Antique Portuguese Manuel Mafra Majolica Candlestick - Storks With Ochre Leaves & Green Base - 1880s

Stunning piece from M. Mafra, Caldas, Portugal
Three cranes on green triangular base, against a tree trunk with ochre yellow leaves surrounding the candle cup.

Originally working as a waiter, Mafra moved to the town of Caldas da Rainha to work at the famed factory of Maria dos Cacos, which he soon took over. At Caldas, Mafra pioneered a style of Palissy ware that was quickly adopted by other Portuguese manufacturers.
