Description
English Tole Tray Attributed to William Henry Ruggles (English, active 1833-1846))
This incredible surviving English tole tray, circa a 1840, displaying an original painting attributed to 19th Century English artist William Henry Ruggles, depicts the side view of a Greyhound dog overlooking the hilly English countryside and farmland. The outer edges of the tray are painted in a soft yellow and gold color. The bottom of the tray maintains a solid brick red color. The construction is tin with papier-mache overlay, painted and lacquered. This sale is for the tray as pictured only, as the tray's folding base legs were lost in time.
A nearly identical oil painting by Willam Henry Ruggles hangs in the Compton Verney House near Kineton in Warwickshire, England, with other works at the Yarmouth Museum and the Saffron Walden Museum in the UK. Ruggles specialized in canine and equestrian paintings, most likely commissioned for the animal's owners.
