Description
Smoked bamboo furnishings were very popular in Europe during the second half of the 19th century which coincided with the Victorian Period in England. Japonism was the craze all over and bamboo furniture was very popular. I was once in Claude Monet's house in Giverny and he had a smoked bamboo coatrack in his entrance hall. Whether he had a magazine or paper rack like this one, I would not know, but this is an interesting piece of accessory with S scrolls with a hint of Art Noveau. It is made of bamboo that had been smoked and the shelves are made of tiny bamboo woven into a mat. All the ends are capped with brass like metal. The construction is very sturdy, and it is not just an antique, it is a piece that can be used.
