Octagonal Chinese wedding basket (circa late 19th Century) is comprised of a dark mahogany toned whickered bamboo reed and rattan that has a clear all-over protective lacquer finish. Brass medallions are positioned like belt buckles and appear as decorative armor style hardware along the baskets arched handle. A distinctive smaller brass handle crowns the top. There are 3 stackable and removable compartments with each "container" serving as the lid to the one beneath it and a separate lid for the top container This type of basket can also be referred to as a betrothal basket and are traditionally used during wedding ceremonies to transport dowry gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family. It is more often used as a decorative object these days. They are used for storage as much as they are covered for their object d'art value and are often a conversation piece especially for those unfamiliar with them.

There is a origin mark that identifies this as originally from the People Republic of China.
