Important William Ruthven Wheeler ( 1832-1894 ) family portrait of William Dowd & his family, dated 1866, signed lower left, relined years ago and in wonderful period frame. From fine home in the Hudson Valley, very nice clean overall condition. William Dowd was a Banker and Railroad Man, and came within 3000 votes of defeating William R. Grace for the Mayor of New York City. The painting measures 41" x 58.5", the frame measures 52" x 69". Has their young Son holding an American flag, a book on the floor, the Father looking at a photo album, and scenic background. Purchased at Sotheby's many years ago....
