Description
Epson Races - Original early 19th C. Henry Aiken Equestrian Print
English / British Market, with incredible details. Printers marks in lower right and left dating to 1810, from The Sporting Gallery - British publication of the time.
And, in the center captions under the image, the best opening line ever..."To the Noblemen and to the Gentlemen subscribers..." inciting this would have been a feature only for members of this elite English publication.
Large size, too - 31.5" wide by 22.5" tall. Makes a statement.
Frame is equally original - simple black wood with a single gold gilt trim line - absolutely of the period and in surprising good shape.
And dig into the details of the image...there is so much going on, and so much to enjoy!
Of note, the image has gently and evenly faded to grey over time, which good pieces on paper of this era often do. But, the patina is even and does not detract form the quality or the Aiken pedigree.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
If it's Ascot or Epson - created by Henry Aiken, we'll take it!
This is horse culture at its most elevated, with all the elegant simplicity of English 19th C. taste.
And to find a frame in such good condition, shows this was a prize item that came from a preservation mined home.
Ever great home news a few antique prints - this is a darn good one.
Present it under a soft light or in a space with strong natural illumination and enjoy the million details within!
