Description
Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Swan & Whitehead Hand Painted Electrified Oil Lamp
This is an antique Victorian-era (1880s) electrified porcelain table lamp produced by the English firm Swan & Whitehead of Shelton, Staffordshire. They were known for hand-painted earthenware and porcelain pieces, often featuring floral motifs like the delicate hand-painted birds, leaves, and blossoms in soft pastels (pink, yellow, green, and white) seen on both the domed glass shade and the baluster-style porcelain base. The brass footed base and font (with a clear glass chimney for oil use, later converted to electric) are typical of their high-quality, export-oriented production, which was popular in the U.S. and Europe during the Aesthetic Movement. The lamp has a rare, high level of preservation -clean, undamaged porcelain with vibrant colors, no visible chips or cracks in the base, and intact gilding on the brass elements-- as many surviving examples show wear, fading, or restoration. These lamps were used as buffet, parlor, or boudoir lamps. The lamp features delicate hand painted pansies, wiring is in good condition, lamp works well. The top edge of the shade is rough as was usual for these pieces and has a few chips. Lamp measures 22" high and 10" wide.
