There is something wonderfully unexpected about this Couroc design.

Rather than depicting a sailboat simply gliding across the water, the artist invites us into the creative process itself. A detailed yacht blueprint unfurls across the composition, while a finely inlaid wooden sailboat seems to emerge directly from its plans-as though the vessel has sailed off the drafting table and into Monterey Bay.

To one side, a beautifully rendered navigation buoy glows in polished brass against the deep black background, while distant seabirds and a tiny white sailboat quietly establish the surrounding seascape. The effect is both minimalist and deeply imaginative, celebrating not only sailing, but the artistry and engineering behind yacht design.

The composition combines warm hardwood veneers, polished brass, and crisp graphic illustration in the unmistakable style that made Couroc of Monterey one of California's most celebrated makers of decorative serving pieces.

This tray is Blueprints Under Sail I, one of a complementary pair. Its companion, Blueprints Under Sail II, features the same inspired concept while displaying the subtle variations that naturally occur in Couroc's individually handcrafted production. Together they form a remarkable presentation for collectors, though each stands beautifully as an individual work of Mid-Century art.
