Description
A striking vintage Couroc of Monterey serving tray featuring an exuberant arrangement of colorful seashells nestled among sweeping, almost coral-like fronds of gleaming brass.
Against Couroc's signature glossy black phenolic resin, the design has wonderful depth and movement. Scallops, spiraled shells and fanciful marine forms appear in warm shades of coral, orange, blush and lavender, each articulated with fine graphic detail. They are surrounded by long, fluid brass tendrils that seem to drift across the dark surface like seaweed moving gently beneath tropical water.
The contrast is particularly beautiful in changing light. The black ground becomes almost mirror-like, while the polished brass catches the light and illuminates the intricate composition. Viewed closely, the design reveals an extraordinary amount of delicate line work that can easily be missed from across the room.
Made by Couroc of Monterey, California, the tray is constructed in the company's distinctive black phenolic servingware with decorative materials permanently fused into the surface. The underside retains its original gold Couroc Giftware label as well as the molded "Couroc - Monterey, California" maker's mark.
At approximately 18" x 12.5", this is Couroc's desirable large-format serving tray-a substantial decorative object equally at home on a cocktail table, bar, ottoman or console. It would also display beautifully as wall art, where the graphic marine composition can be appreciated much like a piece of mid-century California decorative art.
The brass has been gently hand-polished to restore its warm gleam while respecting the vintage character of the piece.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, breaks or structural damage observed. The glossy black surface retains a beautiful luster, and the decorative inlay presents exceptionally well. Brass elements have been gently hand-polished and display a warm gleam. Light surface marks and minor wear are present consistent with age and careful use, most noticeable under reflected light. Original Couroc label and molded maker's mark remain on the underside. Please review photographs, which form part of the condition description.
