Description
An unusually elegant German glass beer stein dating to the turn of the 20th century, circa 1900, combining clear glass, deep emerald-green applied glass decoration, delicate wheel-engraved botanical motifs, and a traditional hinged pewter lid.
The substantial clear glass body is decorated with a series of richly colored green oval applications that appear almost suspended within the glass when illuminated. Delicately engraved flowers, grasses and sweeping leaves provide a distinctly naturalistic counterpoint, reflecting the influence of the German Jugendstil movement at the turn of the century.
The stein retains its original-style hinged pewter lid with a raised beaded border and sculptural thumb lift. The clear glass handle is integrally applied to the body.
Particularly beautiful in natural light, the simplicity of the clear glass allows the emerald inclusions and finely engraved botanical decoration to become the focus. Equally appealing as a piece of antique European glass, barware, or as a decorative object displayed among a collection of pewter and glass vessels.
Unmarked; maker unknown.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: Condition: Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear and patina to the pewter. One small, smooth chip to the interior edge of the glass rim, shown in photographs; it is not visible from the exterior and does not extend into a crack.
