Zahoor ul Akhlaq's Radio Photo of Objects Unidentified belongs to a crucial period in the artist's development, when he was forging a highly original visual language from the intersection of Mughal miniature painting, Islamic architectural traditions and international modernism. Executed as a colour etching in 1983 and numbered 43/100, the work was published by Galerie Börjeson as part of Hommage aux Prix Nobel, dedicated to the Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam, recipient of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics. The composition is characteristic of Akhlaq's fascination with the grid, which became one of the defining devices of his mature practice. Rather than functioning simply as an organising structure, the grid appears to contain, fragment and destabilise the central imagery, creating a tension between order and movement, representation and abstraction. Art historian Christine Vial-Kayser has noted the work's relationship to the layered framing devices of Safavid and Mughal miniature painting, while also connecting Akhlaq's use of the grid to the vocabulary of Western Minimalism. At the centre, a female figure appears to move or run, her body seemingly caught between states of presence and disappearance, while architectural and geometric elements surround her. The figure appears to push beyond the confines of its framing, while other forms extend into the surrounding grid. This deliberate disruption of the picture plane is central to Akhlaq's achievement: the traditional miniature's carefully contained world is opened up and reimagined through a modernist language of fragmentation and spatial ambiguity. The work therefore occupies a fascinating position between the historical image and the abstract field, asking the viewer to look simultaneously at what is represented and at the structures that construct the representation.
