Description
$4,185. A large teal-green diamond fills the centre, set against red, ochre and brown corner blocks and populated with naive animal and figural motifs in lilac, cream and red, with concentric borders of small diamonds stepping outward to the edge. Gabbeh means raw or unclipped, and the type originated as the weaver's own rug rather than a commissioned piece: made by nomadic families for their own tents, with a long shaggy pile, simply dyed wool, and whatever animals and figures the weaver chose to record from the world around her. The deliberate simplicity is authentic rather than affected, and the absence of a cartoon means no two examples repeat. It sets this piece apart from anything else in the sale. Design pattern: Central diamond medallion with animal figures and diamond borders, Gabbeh. Size: 8'3" x 11'4". Gallery Collection.
