The two-colour scheme lends the carpet the graphic authority of a far more modern design while the vocabulary remains entirely classical, an approach the Jaipur workshops of Rajasthan have pursued since inheriting Mughal carpet tradition from the imperial ateliers at Agra and Lahore. The cartouche border, in which the frame is divided into a chain of separate compartments, derives from illuminated manuscript margins and was adopted into carpet design during the same period.
