Square carpets are uncommon for a practical reason: a loom is warped to a fixed width and weavers were generally commissioned for rectangular rooms, so the proportion had to be requested deliberately. It suits a landing, a bay window or the ground beneath a round table, where a rectangle sits awkwardly.
