A deep wine-burgundy runner carries a linked chain of ivory floral medallions along its length, each surrounded by finely drawn vine and blossom in ivory, blue and coral, beneath an ivory border of classical Persian ornament. The linked-medallion runner is a distinct Tabriz specialism, solving the problem of a very long narrow field by repeating a full medallion at intervals rather than extending a single one, so that the carpet reads as a sequence rather than a stretched rectangle. Tabriz has woven continuously since the fifteenth century and remains the reference point against which Persian city weaving is measured.
