That striation is abrash, the horizontal variation that occurs when a weaver exhausts one dye lot and begins another; long treated as a defect by machine-made standards, it is now understood as one of the surest signatures of genuine hand work and hand-dyed yarn. The saz leaf, a long serrated frond that curls back on itself, entered the carpet vocabulary from Ottoman court design and remains among the most demanding motifs to draw convincingly at scale.
