The twin-medallion layout descends from the great sixteenth-century workshop carpets, where a repeating vertical axis of cartouches gave very long carpets a rhythm the single central medallion could not sustain. The antique-wash finish is a deliberate and skilled post-loom treatment, applied to soften the palette toward the mellow tonality of a nineteenth-century piece. Every knot here is tied individually by hand around the cotton warp, a process that for a carpet of this size represents several million separate operations and many months at the loom.
