Description
$5,590. Warm terracotta fills the field beneath an allover arrangement of golden palmettes, sunburst rosettes and slender connecting vines in cream and sage, with an olive-brown border carrying the larger ornament. Jaipur, the planned rose-coloured capital of Rajasthan founded in 1727, inherited the carpet tradition established under the Mughal emperors, whose imperial workshops drew master weavers from across the region and produced a style that opened the palette toward the warmer earth tones seen here. The sunburst rosette, a radiating disc set among vinework, is among the oldest ornaments in the repertoire and among the most satisfying to execute, since its symmetry exposes any inconsistency in the knot count. The wool holds a soft lustre across the surface. Design pattern: Allover palmette and rosette on terracotta ground, Jaipur. Size: 8'11" x 12'3". Gallery Collection.
